That's because they're the very private photos for families all over west Michigan who want a lasting memory. I've done it for over four years and I assuredly get more from the experience than I give.
In addition to shooting in families' homes and in hospitals, I have the good fortune to shoot at Hospice of Michigan's annual Camp Good Grief, a one-day camp experience for kids who are going through the grieving process. Since HOM has published the video I created using my photos I am able to showcase a few photos here along with the video of this transformative day.
In 2017 this wonderful Hospice of Michigan family gave me permission to post these portraits. Their grace in the face of challenges is as beautiful as their faces and the lush surroundings in which I photographed them.
On Flag Day, Hospice of Michigan teamed up with Heather Hills Retirement Village for a Veterans Pinning Ceremony salute. I was honored to photograph this stirring event.
I have also donated my photo services to many other great organizations including:
Refugee Education Center
Serving refugee families who were forced to flee their own countries. By helping refugee families become contributing members of the local community, the Refugee Education Center helps strengthen the economic and cultural vitality of West Michigan.
Music therapy brings life, laughter and memories of old-time favorites into Grand Rapids area seniors' facilities. It's a joyful way of alleviating boredom while enriching the quality of life for the elderly.
Laughfest (for Gilda's Club)
An annual festival that brings many of the nation's best comics to Grand Rapids to raise money for a remarkable organization that provides free emotional healthcare to individuals and families on any kind of cancer journey.
The Ronald McDonald House
Keeps families close together while loved ones receive the medical care they need.
The Children's Healing Center
The first of its kind in the nation, CHC is a safe place where kids with a weak immune system can feel like a kid and have fun with other kids.
West Michigan Whitecaps
In early January, 2014 a fire extensively damaged Fifth Third Ballpark, home of the West Michigan Whitecaps, the Detroit Tigers single A franchise. Throughout that bitterly cold winter and right up to Opening Day I chronicled the re-build. And together with Larry Melton of 1041 East Productions, we created a video that hit the ball out of the park at that year's Major League Winter Meetings when the Whitecaps were honored as the minor league franchise of the year.
Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park
For Several years I was a volunteer photographer for Meijer Gardens. I shot the renowned Chihuly exhibit and many of the Summer Concert Series.
Meijer Gardens and & Sculpture Park is quite simply a dream assignment for a photographer.
Fulton Street Farmers Market -- "Eat Local"
The oldest and the largest farm market in Grand Rapids. Unmatched for farm fresh farm flavor... the true definition of farm-to-table dining.
What a blast to use footage I shot at Jeff & Paige's CD launch concert and then combine it with my Farmers Market photography.
I know theatre and I know photography. Most importantly I know how to shoot live theatre... how to capture the energy and emotion of a play so that others will want to be there to see it themselves.
