Grand Rapids Community College stages a time-twisting adventure through 100 years of its history with its production of Open Door.
A collaboration between the theater and music departments, the script was written by Walt Lockwood, a retired GRCC English professor, and James Schafer, GRCC’s coordinator of video broadcasting and distribution. The music department created the play’s original compositions.
The story is a roller coaster ride through the people, music and events that made GRCC — and West Michigan — what it is today.
When I first began my Sensitography theatre gig, I admittedly thought about retaining the rights to all my photos and then charging the cast and crew up the ying yang for them. That had been the long-standing SOP in Grand Rapids for theatrical photos. But I bagged the idea for umpteen reasons, not the least of which is that the money thing felt over-the-top crass and over-the-top wrong. Now I simply provide my images to the theatre. Then, if and when the theatre posts them, all of you can freely download them to your heart's content. And that makes my heart content. Just as it makes me feel more a part of the theatre community that I love so much.
Obviously, if you are unable to snag my photos from the theatre's social media sites, you can save them to your photo library right here and now.
I know theatre and I know photography. Most importantly I know how to shoot live theatre... how to capture the energy and emotion of a play so that others will want to be there to see it themselves.
